Notts County 4 Morecambe 1
NOTTS County strengthened their grip on the League Two title with a resounding 4-1 win against Morecambe at Meadow Lane.
Lee Hughes hit a first half double as the rampant Magpies roared into a 3-0 lead in the opening 18 minutes.
Notts' leading marksman scored twice in 11 minutes in the first half to take his goals tally to 30 for the season – and Ricky Ravenhill scored a stunning volley as Steve Cotterill's side utterly dominated the visitors.
David Artell scored for Morecambe in the second half, before Ben Davies completed the rout, which makes the Magpies' promotion to League One mathematically certain and keeps them top of the table with five games left.
Notts were unchanged from their 3-1 home win against Lincoln City on Tuesday night – a victory that sealed their promotion in League Two.
Significantly, Luke Rodgers was not in the squad to face Morecambe, and uncertainty surrounded whether the striker is leaving Notts to join MLS side New York Red Bulls.
Hughes was partnered in attack by Delroy Facey, after the pair both scored against the Imps.
Morecambe were notably missing their leading scorer Phil Jevons through injury. He was replaced by Wayne Curtis in the visitors' attack, who partnered Paul Mullin.
Mark Duffy headed over the crossbar from eight yards in the opening stages, before Hughes forced ex-Nottingham Forest keeper Barry Roche into a great save on five minutes.
Hughes seized onto a flick on from Facey inside the penalty and aimed a right-footed effort towards the top left corner, but Roche reacted rapidly and parried it away.
Hughes took his next chance, typically, to put the Magpies ahead on seven minutes.
It was a wonderfully-worked opening goal. Craig Westcarr broke down the left wing and measured a cross brilliantly to Hughes and he headed it powerfully past Roche from close-range.
Artell headed over the crossbar in reply for the visitors three minutes later.
It was 2-0 to Notts on 14 minutes, as Ravenhill scored a wonder goal.
When Westcarr's deep cross was only headed clear to the edge of the penalty area, the Magpies' midfielder burst onto the loose ball and fired an unstoppable volley past Roche.
As Notts ran riot, Meadow Lane was rocking.
Hughes put the Magpies 3-0 ahead on 18 minutes.
Davies curled a trademark free-kick into the penalty area from near the halfway line and Hughes controlled it before sweeping a low shot past Roche from eight yards.
It capped an explosive opening 18 minutes from Notts, who were oozing confidence.
Hughes went close to completing a quick-fire hat-trick on 23 minutes.
Again, the visitors' defence could not cope with the aerial threat of Facey and he headed the ball into the path of Hughes inside the box, but Roche raced off his goal-line and blocked his shot.
Craig Stanley later blazed a free-kick over Kasper Schmeichel's crossbar from the edge of the penalty area and Magpies' defender Mike Edwards made a good clearance from inside his own six-yard box when Curtis aimed a low cross across the face of goal to Mullin.
Notts threatened again in the closing stages of he first half. Artell almost turned Westcarr's low cross into the six-yard box into his own net, but Roche saved and then, on 40 minutes, Hughes headed over the bar from six yards.
Davies miscued a shot wide from just inside the penalty area in 50 minutes, as the Magpies resumed control in the second half.
Ahead 3-0, Notts were comfortable, without playing in top gear.
Stewart Drummond fired a 30-yard effort at goal on 57 minutes, but Schmeichel saved it comfortably.
Hughes almost latched onto a long kick forward from Schmeichel just after the hour mark, but Roche was alert to the danger and raced off his goal-line to claim the ball.
Ravenhill was replaced in central midfield by Johnnie Jackson on 63 minutes, and walked off the pitch to a deserved ovation from the Magpies' fans.
Jackson was instantly involved and got forward purposefully into the penalty area to receive a pass from John Thompson, but his shot was blocked.
Jackson got a sight of goal for a second time on 72 minutes, but sent a left-footed strike wide of Roche's right-hand post.
Morecambe responded and hit the woodwork soon after when Duffy's shot from just inside the box took a deflection, looped over Schmeichel and onto the crossbar.
The visitors did pull a goal back on 73 minutes when Artell met a corner with a good header and directed it into the top corner from close-range.
The Magpies' reply was almost instant, and they scored a fourth goal on 77 minutes when Davies beat Roche at the second attempt.
Substitute Jamie Clapham crossed into the six-yard box from the left and Davies side-footed at goal, but Roche denied him with a good save.
Davies pounced on the rebound and prodded the ball into the net from close-range, before celebrating in front of the Kop.
