Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has given Notts County a week to find new investment or he will walk out.
Eriksson, appointed director of football in the summer, has become disillusioned by the broken promises, having been originally told he would have funds to get the League Two club into the Premier League within five years.

As Notts held Wigan Athletic to a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup yesterday, a TV interview was being screened in Sweden in which Eriksson said: 'My patience is not infinite. The situation is urgent. January 31 is the deadline to bring in new players. And if we want to be promoted, we have to have new players. Hopefully within a few days something positive will happen.'

Executive chairman Peter Trembling admits that unless his talks with potential investors are successful, they 'will have some issues' as they face a winding-up order over a £600,000 tax bill.

NOTTS County were today facing up to the terrifying reality that they need £2m by Wednesday to survive.

The Magpies are due in the High Court in two days after being served a winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs over an unpaid £600,000 tax bill.

The club's executive chairman Peter Trembling still hopes to pay it off and avoid going to court.

But he admits the club might now end up in court – and could have to prove they have enough cash to pay the rest of their outstanding debts of £1.5m – not just to the HMRC.

Notts were expected to make a fresh announcement today over their search for investment that would enable them to pay off their creditors.


They were in talks with two potential major investors last week, said to be keen on co-investment in the club.

And Trembling said: "We hope to be able to satisfy the winding-up petition before Wednesday by paying off our debts.

"The critical thing is to get two million into our bank account before then.

"It's a challenge but that's what we have been working towards for the last few weeks. I'm ever hopeful we can do that.

"It will give us a bit of room to play with. We could actually go to court and pay off our tax bill of £600,000. But the danger with a winding-up petition is that we could have all of our creditors turning up on the court steps and jumping on the back of the petition.

"In which case, we have to satisfy the judge we've got the funds to pay everybody.

"If we haven't got that in our bank account our next course of action is to show proof of funds committed to pay these creditors off and that we just need a bit more time, and really plead our case."

Trembling is not contemplating administration. He added: "It's just not an effective way around it, particularly as we're willing to pay all of our creditors 100 pence in the pound. We just need a bit more time to do it.

"I know it has happened before where clubs have tried to get rid of their creditors by offering them ten pence in the pound and going into administration.

"I don't think that's the right thing to do. Morally, that is abhorrent."

He was confident of striking an investment deal by the end of last week.

But Trembling explained: "Life throws a few curve balls at you.

"Unfortunately, one of the main investors had to be at a funeral on Friday.

"It's little practical things like that which delay the process.

"I've already said it's a three-month process we're trying to cram into three or four weeks."

Notts had something to smile about – on the pitch at least – after taking Premiership Wigan to an FA Cup replay with a 2-2 draw at Meadow Lane on Saturday.

If they carry on their giant-killing act and win at the DW Stadium, they will face Fulham away in the fifth round.

Cherries: Schmeichel 'smashed changing room door'

Cherries chiefs were last night understood to be considering asking Notts County officials to foot the bill for a damaged changing room door.

Magpies goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel allegedly kicked the door in frustration as he entered the dressing room with his team trailing 2-0 at the interval.

The wooden frame above the door came away from the wall, while the hinges were also broken. County backroom staff were seen surveying the damage following the final whistle.

However, when quizzed by the Daily Echo, County manager David Kevan said he was unaware of the damage.

Schmeichel, the son of legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter, appeared upset as the two teams left the field following County’s 2-1 defeat.

He initially refused to shake hands with some Cherries players, although then relented. Earlier, the Dane had been jeered by a section of the home support as he prepared to take a goal kick.

It remains to be seen whether Cherries will pursue the matter as relations between the two clubs are good.

County have agreed to share the Sky Sports broadcast kitty with Cherries when the sides meet at Meadow Lane next month.

And County director of football Sven Goran Eriksson was apparently full of praise for Cherries following last night’s clash.

Former England manager Eriksson is understood to have complimented Cherries by describing their first-half showing as the best by any team against County this season.

Sven-Göran Eriksson’s dream of transforming one of the lowliest clubs in English football into a Premier League force is over.

The former England head coach will attend Notts County’s FA Cup fifth-round tie away to Fulham on Sunday as no more than honorary president of the Coca-Cola League Two club after they were yesterday taken over by Ray Trew, a former chairman of Lincoln City who is already promising a new era of austerity amid deepening financial troubles.

Eriksson and his lawyer concluded the end of his turbulent eight-month reign as director of football at Meadow Lane yesterday after Trew agreed his takeover from Peter Trembling, the outgoing chairman, for a nominal £1, as exclusively revealed by Times Online yesterday.

The deal will bring to an end a sorry chapter in the history of County and the Football League, and Eriksson will be free to consider offers for taking charge of a competing nation at this summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa. The Swede has come to be loved and respected by supporters as he stuck by a club almost overwhelmed by an avalanche of debt.

“There is going to have to be some serious cost-cutting. Those who think the club is £1.5 million in debt are living in cloud-cuckoo-land. The club has a backroom staff that Premier League clubs wouldn’t carry.

“As businessmen, we have to cut our coat according to our cloth. We live in the real world. I’m very ambitious and we want to take Notts County to the Coca-Cola Championship eventually. We’re going to do a Peterborough United, but planning for the Premier League was a bridge too far.”

Eriksson was brought in by Munto Finance, a front company for the mysterious Qadbak group of investors, last summer with the promise of £25 million to propel County to the top flight within five years. Players were drafted in on top wages, including Sol Campbell, the former England defender. But Campbell walked out on his £40,000-a-week contract after one game and Qadbak’s Middle East-based investors melted away at the end of last year as debts rose.

The club must settle a £324,000 tax bill next month, are being pursued by Marston’s, one of the country’s leading brewers, who claim they are owed £95,000, and defaulted on £37,000 in legal fees owed to Nottingham Rugby Club yesterday after reneging on a groundsharing deal.

Eriksson has maintained his dignity and his loyalty since “the project” to transform County turned into a financial debacle. Alongside Trembling, he has been present at negotiations to try to save the club from oblivion, but the new board will not even be able to afford his relatively meagre £250,000-a-year salary so Eriksson will return to Nottingham today to say his goodbyes.

Fans will welcome the promise of stability offered by Trew and his fellow directors, Luke Jones and Jason Brewer, who set up a new company, Notts County Football Club 1862 — a reference to the date that the world’s oldest professional club was founded — on February 8 in preparation for the takeover.

Lee Hughes, who may be among the players who will prove too expensive to keep come the summer, paid tribute to Eriksson.

“He did not have to stay,” the forward said. “But I think there was a genuine feeling that he wanted to help secure the investment.”

Notts County are expected to hand former Burnley boss Steve Cotterill the manager's job for the rest of the season.

The League Two club want Cotterill to take charge while new owner Ray Trew sorts out the club's dire finances.
Former Lincoln City chairman Trew recently bought County after previous owners Munto Finance failed to come up with the cash it promised Sven Goran Eriksson to take them to the Premier League.
Eriksson has since left and the club are trying to find £2.5m to survive until the end of the season.
Cotterill would take over from caretaker Dave Kevan on a short-term deal with the position reviewed in the summer.
The Magpies' executive chairman Jim Rodwell, meanwhile, admitted on Saturday the club are now £6m in debt and will announce today whether they are planning to go into administration.
They may be forced into calling in the administrators before facing a winding-up petition on Wednesday over the £370,000 they owe HM Revenue and Customs.
